Most people should spend about $700 to $1,000 on a new laptop. That’s the band where, in our count of 60 shortlist laptops priced October 21 and 22, 2026, 16 GB of memory and a 512 GB SSD stop being the exception and become the norm. Spend less if all you need is a browser, and more only if you game, edit video or run AI models on the laptop itself.
What moves the number is what you’ll run, whether your school or job sets a minimum, and how long you want it to last. A cheap laptop that meets your one hard rule beats an expensive one that doesn’t.
How we counted
We started from our shortlist of 83 laptops and kept the 60 you could actually buy new on October 21 or 22, 2026: priced at the maker’s own store, or sold by Best Buy itself, never by a Marketplace seller. We dropped 23: Marketplace-only and unpriced listings, models marked “Coming Soon”, “Available Soon”, “Sold Out” or “Unavailable”, a pre-order, an out-of-stock DIY kit, a clearance unit Best Buy wouldn’t ship, a build whose price we couldn’t confirm, and refurbished units.
Then we sorted them into price bands and counted specs from the makers’ spec sheets. The arithmetic is ours. Our shortlist leans toward student, office and creator laptops, so it isn’t the whole market. Treat the counts as a guide to what’s normal at each price, not a census.
What each price tier gets you
RAM and storage are what each laptop ships with. Battery is the maker’s stated capacity in watt-hours, which tells you the size of the battery, not how many hours you’ll get.
| Price band | Laptops in our count | 16 GB+ RAM | 512 GB+ SSD | Median battery | Cheapest in the band (price, store, date) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to $300 | 1 | 0 of 1 | 0 of 1 | Not stated | HP 14 (N150, 4 GB, 128 GB): $199.99, Best Buy, Oct 22, 2026 (sale) |
| $300 to $500 | 3 | 1 of 3 | 0 of 3 | 42 Wh | ASUS Chromebook Plus CX14: $429.00, Best Buy, Oct 22, 2026 (sale) |
| $500 to $700 | 10 | 2 of 10 | 4 of 10 | 50 Wh | Acer Aspire Go 15 AG15-21PT: $579.99, Acer store, Oct 22, 2026 (sale) |
| $700 to $1,000 | 6 | 5 of 6 | 6 of 6 | 70 Wh | Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i 15 Gen 11 (8 GB): $779.99, lenovo.com, Oct 22, 2026 (sale) |
| $1,000 to $1,500 | 15 | 14 of 15 | 13 of 15 | 55 Wh | Dell Pro 14 Essential (8 GB): $1,058.00, dell.com, Oct 21, 2026 |
| $1,500 and up | 25 | 25 of 25 | 25 of 25 | 72 Wh | Surface Laptop 13.8-inch (8th Edition): $1,599.99, microsoft.com, Oct 21, 2026 |
Our count of 60 shortlist laptops sold new by a maker store or by Best Buy, priced Oct 21–22, 2026. Specs from maker spec sheets. Check the live price: many of these were sale prices.
Up to $300: a stopgap
Only one laptop in our count was buyable new under $300: an HP 14 with an Intel N150, 4 GB of memory, 128 GB of storage and a 1366×768 TN screen. Best Buy’s page didn’t say whether it ships in S mode, so check before you buy.
4 GB meets Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum and Examplify’s 4 GB floor, but ExamSoft recommends 8 GB when your exams use ExamID or ExamMonitor (ExamSoft, checked October 2026). We found no Chromebook Plus under $400 sold by Best Buy or a maker store on October 22, 2026. At this budget, a refurbished laptop or a Best Buy open-box unit usually gets you more.
$300 to $500: Chromebook Plus territory
This band is where a Chromebook stops feeling cheap. Google’s current Chromebook Plus page promises “8GB+ of RAM, and 128GB+ of storage” (Google, read October 22, 2026); its 2023 launch post also listed a Full HD IPS screen and a 1080p webcam, so check the screen and camera on the model you pick (Google, Oct 2, 2023). Both Chromebook Plus models in our count get ChromeOS updates until June 2035, per Google’s update list.
The one Windows laptop here had 16 GB but only 256 GB of storage and a 250-nit screen. Screens in this band were 250 to 300 nits where the maker stated it, which is fine indoors and dim by a window. Read Chromebook vs laptop before you pick one.
$500 to $700: the compromise band
Expect one big compromise here. Eight of the 10 laptops shipped with 8 GB, and only four had a 512 GB SSD. The exceptions trade something else away: the cheapest laptop in our count with both 16 GB and 512 GB, Lenovo’s IdeaPad Slim 3 15ARP10, has a 300-nit, 45% NTSC screen, a 720p camera and no keyboard backlight.
The MacBook Neo sits near the top of this band with a 500-nit screen, but its 8 GB can’t be upgraded. Three of the 10 were Chromebooks, and one ran Windows on an Arm chip, which some school and exam software rules out. Our Mac vs Windows for college guide covers that check.
$700 to $1,000: where most people should land
This is the band where the spec sheet stops fighting you. Five of the six laptops had 16 GB, all six had a 512 GB SSD, three had OLED screens, and the median battery was 70 Wh, the biggest of any band below $1,500.
There’s a catch. All six were on a sale or “Top Deal” price when we checked, so this band depends on deals. Set a price alert and buy during a sale: our guide to the best time to buy a laptop covers when those land.
$1,000 to $1,500: power or polish, not both
Here you pay for one specific thing. Fourteen of 15 had 16 GB or more, but the band splits: four had RTX graphics, three were MacBook Airs, and three were business laptops with Windows 11 Pro. The median battery fell to 55 Wh, pulled down by the 13-inch MacBook Air and business models with 48 to 55 Wh packs.
No new RTX 50-series laptop was under $1,000 from a maker or Best Buy on October 22, 2026; the only new RTX laptop under $1,000 we found was an HP Victus 15 with a previous-generation RTX 4050 at Best Buy.
$1,500 and up: specialist hardware
Every laptop in this band had at least 16 GB and 512 GB. The median was 32 GB of memory and a 1 TB SSD, and 10 of the 25 had NVIDIA RTX graphics: seven as a separate GeForce card, three built into an N1X chip. Ten of the 11 that state a standard (non-HDR) brightness figure rated 400 nits or more. This money buys more graphics, more memory and bigger drives. It doesn’t buy a faster web browser.
How much to spend by what you do
Match the budget to the hardest thing you’ll ask the laptop to do. Then stop. The last column is our reading of the counts above.
| What you do | Sensible budget | What to prioritize | Where spending more stops helping |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web, email, streaming, Google Docs | $300 to $500 | 8 GB, a Full HD screen, a long ChromeOS update date | Past Chromebook Plus specs, a browser gains little |
| High school or college (Windows apps, exam software) | $500 to $1,000 | 16 GB, 512 GB, x86 Windows 11 not in S mode, your program’s list | Past 16 GB and a good screen, unless your major needs a GPU |
| Office work, spreadsheets, accounting | $700 to $1,500 | 16 GB, keyboard, screen size, Windows 11 Pro if IT asks | A gaming GPU adds weight you won’t use |
| Gaming | $1,000 to $1,500 | An RTX 50-series GPU, cooling, a 144 Hz screen | Each step up mostly buys a bigger GPU; check your games first |
| Video editing, 3D, local AI | $1,500 and up | 32 GB or more, GPU memory or unified memory, 1 TB | Keeps scaling with project size; buy for your biggest project |
Students should check their program’s page first. Our survey of nursing school laptop requirements shows how often schools set their own floor, and are gaming laptops good for school covers the weight and battery trade-off. For office use, choose a laptop for accountants around the software and workload you need.
What it means when you buy
Buy the memory you need on day one. In our count, more laptops had memory that can’t be upgraded than memory that can, and every MacBook falls in the first group.
Three more rules from the counts:
- Don’t pay for a bigger number you won’t use. A 2-in-1 hinge, an OLED panel or an RTX card each add cost. Our 2-in-1 guide covers who actually uses tablet mode.
- Watch the sale price, not the “value” price. All six laptops between $700 and $1,000 in our count were on sale, and every one listed a comparison price above $1,000.
- Refurbished moves you up a tier. On October 22, 2026, Apple’s refurbished 13-inch MacBook Air M5 cost about 15% less than new with the same one-year warranty, per our refurbished laptop guide.
FAQ
How much should I spend on a laptop for college?
Plan on about $500 to $1,000 for a Windows laptop or a MacBook Neo, and check your program’s page before anything else. Some set a memory minimum, require x86 Windows 11 or run exams in a specific app. A Chromebook Plus under $500 works only if your school’s software runs in a browser.
How much should I spend on a laptop for work?
For office work, $700 to $1,500 covers it. In our count, every laptop that ships with Windows 11 Pro was priced above $1,000. If your employer supplies the laptop or sets a spec, follow that first.
Is a $1,000 laptop worth it over a $500 one?
For most people, yes, if the extra money buys 16 GB, a 512 GB SSD and a brighter screen. In our count, only 2 of 10 laptops between $500 and $700 had 16 GB, against 5 of 6 between $700 and $1,000. If you only browse and stream, the cheaper laptop is enough.
Is a cheap laptop worth it?
It can be, as a second machine or for one simple job. Under $300, the only new laptop in our count had 4 GB and 128 GB, which leaves little room for Windows updates and apps. A refurbished or open-box laptop at the same price usually has better specs.
What to do next
- Write down the hardest thing you’ll run, and any school or employer minimum. That sets your band.
- If a game or app is the deciding factor, check it with our Will it run? checker.
- Shortlist laptops with 16 GB and 512 GB in your band. Accept 8 GB only for a Chromebook or a browser-only machine.
- Set a price alert and buy during a sale. The $700 to $1,000 band depends on deals.
