Should you repair, upgrade or replace your laptop?

Repair your laptop if the fix costs under half the price of a comparable new one and it still gets security updates. If either test fails, replace it. The calculator below gives the verdict and the reason.

What kind of laptop?

Search Start for PC Health Check and choose Check now. As a rough guide, Microsoft’s supported lists start at Intel 8th-gen Core chips and, for AMD laptop chips, the Ryzen 3000 series (such as the 3500U).

How to tell: on Windows, Task Manager › Performance › Memory shows Slots used (for example 1 of 2). The maker’s spec sheet settles it: Lenovo’s PSREF, for one, says “soldered memory, not upgradable” or lists SODIMM slots and an M.2 slot.

The rules the calculator uses

Software support comes first. A laptop that stops getting security updates within a year isn't worth a repair bill, however cheap. After that, the cost of the fix decides, then the age and whether you can add parts.

The cost test is the old 50% rule. Consumer Reports long advised against spending more than half the price of a new product to fix an old one. It has since moved to a more detailed model built on member surveys, but for a laptop the simple version still holds up: past half, the money does more toward a new machine. For Intel MacBooks we use a stricter 25% line, because Apple left them off macOS 27 Golden Gate.

The age line is ours. If a laptop is slow, 4 years old or more, and has no memory slot to fill, nothing cheap will make it faster. Under 4 years, try a clean reset of the operating system before you spend anything. One exception on older Windows laptops: if Task Manager shows the drive as an HDD, an SSD swap is worth trying first.

Software support dates that decide it

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft's Extended Security Updates for home users run until October 12, 2027, whenever you enroll, on Windows 10 version 22H2. A Windows 10 PC that passes PC Health Check gets Windows 11 free through Windows Update, so it's still a candidate for repair.

What a battery replacement costs

A battery is the cheapest fix on most laptops, and the one people skip. If yours won't last the morning, check how worn it is with our battery health check before you shop for a new laptop.

Apple publishes US prices for MacBook battery service. For Windows laptops and Chromebooks, prices depend on the maker and the shop, so get a quote or price the part by the number on the old battery.

How to tell if you can upgrade RAM or the SSD

The maker's spec sheet tells you. Lenovo's PSREF sheets are a clear example: the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 lists two DDR5 SODIMM slots and one M.2 2280 SSD slot, while the X1 Carbon Gen 12 says "soldered memory, not upgradable" but still has an M.2 slot for the drive.

On Windows, open Task Manager, go to Performance, then Memory. The Slots used line shows how many memory slots there are and how many are full. If it reads 1 of 2, you can add a stick.

MacBooks with Apple silicon can't be upgraded later. Apple lists their memory and storage as "configurable to" options at purchase, and it explains that M-series memory sits inside the chip package. Intel MacBooks are no better: Apple says only some models from 2012 and earlier have removable memory. For a full MacBook, clear space in System Settings › General › Storage first, then add an external drive or iCloud.

Common mistakes

Comparing the quote with what you paid years ago. Use what a comparable laptop costs today; that's the money you'd actually spend.

Repairing a Windows 10 laptop that can't run Windows 11. A new screen won't bring back security updates after October 2027.

Replacing a laptop that only needs a battery or more memory. Both cost a fraction of a new machine. A slow laptop under 4 years old usually needs a clean reset, not new hardware.

Paying for a fix before the free checks. A laptop that won't turn on may only need another outlet or charger. A full drive often clears with Storage Sense (Settings › System › Storage on Windows).

Forgetting the files. Before any repair or trade-in, back up. A laptop that won't turn on can usually still give up its drive to a repair shop.

If the answer is Replace, the laptop finder narrows the field by budget and use.

Questions people ask

How long should a laptop last?

Long enough to cover its software support, if the hardware holds up. Chromebooks get 10 years of updates from their platform's release. On Windows and Mac, check the support dates in the table above. The battery usually wears out first, and that's a cheap fix.

Is it worth fixing a 5-year-old laptop?

Yes, if the fix costs under half of a comparable new laptop and it still gets updates. A Windows 10 laptop that can't run Windows 11 is the main exception: its security updates stop on October 12, 2027.

Can I keep using Windows 10?

It keeps working, but without updates it's more exposed to malware. Enroll in Extended Security Updates to stay covered until October 12, 2027. You need Windows 10 version 22H2. It's free if you sync your PC settings, or costs 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points or a one-time $30.

What happens when a Chromebook's updates end?

It still starts and runs, but it gets no more security fixes or browser updates. Some apps and features will stop working over time. Settings › About ChromeOS › Additional details shows the update schedule. Some models from before 2021 can opt in to extended updates there, but Google says it can't be undone and it removes Android apps.

Will more RAM make my laptop faster?

Only if it's running short. A laptop with 8 GB or less and a free slot often feels quicker with 16 GB. If it already has 16 GB, more memory rarely helps everyday use.
