Will it fit? Laptop bag and sleeve checker

Laptop size vs. inner size
Your laptop

Pick it from the list, or type the outside size from its spec sheet. Thickness is the thickest point. Only know the screen size? Enter just that.

The bag or sleeve, inside

Use the inner or laptop-compartment size from the listing, not the outside size. If the listing gives width × thickness × depth, we’ll sort it out. Leave it blank to see what to shop for.

Airline personal-item limits (like 18 × 14 × 8 in) are the bag’s outside size. Check the laptop compartment instead.

Why a "14-inch" bag isn't 14 inches

The inch number on a laptop bag is the screen diagonal it's made for. Pelican says so outright for its 14.2-inch sleeve: the size is "measured based on diagonal size of screen." HP's 14-inch sleeve "fits up to a 14 inch diagonal laptop," while its outside measures 37 × 27 cm.

Screen size is a rough guide to a laptop's footprint, nothing more. Bezels, hinges and screen shape all change it. A 15.3-inch MacBook Air is 13.40 inches wide, while the 15.6-inch Lenovo LOQ Essential is 14.22 inches wide and more than twice as thick. That's 0.82 inches wider for screens 0.3 inches apart.

How to find the two sizes

Your laptop's size is on the maker's spec page, usually listed as width × depth × height. Apple lists height, width and depth. Lenovo's PSREF sheets give W × D × H and often a range for thickness, like 16.9–17.9 mm. Use the larger number. The checker's list already has 16 common models filled in from their makers' pages.

For the bag, look for "interior dimensions," "laptop compartment" or "inner size" in the listing. The outside size is no help, since padding and zippers take up room. Thule's 14-inch MacBook sleeve is 14.2 × 10.2 inches outside but 12.2 × 8.7 inside. Listings often write it as width × thickness × depth, like Thule's 12.2 × 0.6 × 8.7.

If a listing gives only a screen size, type that label into the checker. It compares your laptop with a typical laptop for that label. Measuring a sleeve yourself? Lay it flat and tick "measured flat". A sleeve has to wrap around the laptop's thickness, so the checker takes that off the width.

Airline personal-item limits are a different thing. American Airlines allows 18 × 14 × 8 inches, and that's the whole bag's outside size. It tells you the bag can go on board, not that your laptop fits its sleeve pocket. Check the laptop compartment for that.

Here are the outside sizes of the laptops in the checker, widest dimension first. Thickness is the thickest point the maker lists. The label follows screen size (a 14.5–15.3-inch screen gets the 15-inch label), but where a laptop is deeper than most at its size, we say so.

What fits, tight and won't fit mean

The checker takes the inside size minus the laptop size on each side and judges by the tightest one. The clearance is plain subtraction. The bands are our rule of thumb.

Fits means at least ¼ inch (6 mm) of total play in width and depth. Tight means it goes in with less than that. Fine for a sleeve that hugs the laptop, awkward in a backpack slot. If you add the inner thickness, the checker tests that too. Gaps within 1 mm count as a match, because spec sheets round.

Squeeze means up to about 4 mm short. Padded sleeves are sometimes listed at or just under the laptop they're made for. Thule lists its Subterra 14-inch MacBook sleeve's compartment at 12.2 × 8.7 inches, while the 14-inch MacBook Pro is 12.31 × 8.71. Its foam-lined interior gives a little. A rigid compartment won't. Won't fit means it's short by more than that.

Fits, loose means more than 1½ inches of play. In a backpack with a strap that's fine. In a sleeve the laptop slides around. Before you size down, check you didn't enter the outside size: a sleeve's inside is usually 1 to 2 inches smaller each way.

Mistakes that make a bag not fit

The usual one is buying by the label alone. A 15.6-inch gaming laptop is often bigger in every direction than a "15-inch" sleeve built around a slim ultrabook. Check the inside size against your laptop's width and depth, every time.

The second is forgetting what you've added. A snap-on hard shell or a thick skin adds to every side. Measure the laptop with its case on. Gaming laptops with rear vents or a thick hinge also need the thickest number, not the front edge.

The third is going up a size "to be safe" with a sleeve. A 16-inch sleeve on a 14-inch laptop leaves inches of play, and the laptop rattles. Backpacks forgive that; sleeves don't. Questions people ask

Will a 15.6-inch laptop fit in a 15-inch sleeve?

Sometimes, but don't count on it. A 15.6-inch laptop is usually wider than a 15.3-inch one: the Lenovo LOQ Essential is 14.22 inches wide, against 13.40 for a 15-inch MacBook Air. Check the sleeve's inside width against your laptop before you buy, or shop for 15.6-inch sleeves.

Will a 16-inch laptop fit a 15.6-inch backpack?

Often, for a MacBook Pro 16. It measures 14.01 × 9.77 inches, smaller than the 15.6-inch Lenovo LOQ Essential at 14.22 × 10.06, so a backpack built for 15.6-inch laptops usually takes it. A thick 16-inch gaming laptop is less reliable: the ASUS ROG Strix G16 is 10.55 inches deep and up to 1.21 thick. Check the compartment size first.

Will my laptop fit an 18 × 14 × 8 personal item bag?

Most 13- to 16-inch laptops are smaller than that, but the 18 × 14 × 8-inch limit (American Airlines' personal-item size) is the bag's outside. What matters is the bag's laptop compartment, so find that size in the listing and check it here.

Will a 14-inch laptop fit in a 15.6-inch bag?

Yes, with room to spare. In a backpack that's fine. In a sleeve the laptop will slide around, so a 14-inch sleeve is the better fit.

What size sleeve does a 13.6-inch MacBook Air need?

Shop for 13-inch sleeves made for the MacBook Air, or any sleeve with an inside of at least about 12.2 × 8.7 inches. The laptop measures 11.97 × 8.46 × 0.44 inches.

Does a 16-inch MacBook Pro fit a 16-inch bag?

Often, but check. It measures 14.01 × 9.77 × 0.66 inches. For an easy fit, look for an inside of at least about 14.3 × 10.0 inches.

Should I measure my laptop myself?

Use the maker's spec page first, it's more accurate than a tape. Measure only if you've added a case, or if the laptop isn't listed anywhere.
